BEFUS – Barbara Befus age 55 of Grand Rapids was welcomed into the arms of her Savior on March 16 2010 in Grand Rapids after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Barbara grew up in Defiance Ohio the daughter of Reeder and Mildred Hutchinson whom preceded her in death. In 1978 she married John (Jack) Befus who survives. She is also survived by daughters Leana (Eric) Tank and Audrey (Francis) Mahlie of Grand Rapids; by her son Reed Befus a senior at WMU; by grandchildren Cosette and Theodore Mahlie and Eva Tank; and by her brother Timothy Hutchinson of Defiance; parents-in-law Samuel & Patricia Befus of Kalamazoo. While growing up in Defiance Barbara often assisted her father Defiance Attorney Reeder Hutchinson in performing magic shows throughout Northwest Ohio later performing magic of her own to small groups. After her marriage she lived in Arizona California and Kansas before moving to Grand Rapids with her family in 1987. As a Speech Pathologist for Knapp Charter Academy she was dearly loved by her students. A creative person Barbara loved to paint and enjoyed traveling and camping during her childrens younger years. In 2006 Barbara became a Grandmother and showered her love and gifts on this new generation. Barbaras center flowed from a steadfast trust in a loving God with whom she enjoyed a growing daily friendship. Her gentle loving spirit and fine listening ear will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved this beautiful woman for indeed she lived a most beautiful life. Visitation will be 2-4 & 6-8 PM at the O’Brien-Eggebeen-Gerst Funeral Home 3980 Cascade Rd SE. A service celebrating her life will be held at the Vineyard North Church 4700 E. Beltline NE Pastor Ray Befus officiating on March 20th at 11:30 a.m. It is preferred that memorials be made by contribution to or sponsoring a child with Compassion International in Barbs name.
