David John Baines, age 76 of Spring Lake formerly of Cascade, passed away with family and friends at his side Sunday, January 29, 2017. He was preceded in death by his brother Tom Baines, parents Jack and Flossie Baines. He is survived by his children Todd (Carman) Baines, Kelley (Roger) Stranger; brother Doug (Charlotte) Baines; sister Laurie (Peter) Robertson; sister-in-law Kathleen Baines; grandchildren Dylan and Tyler Baines; also many loved nieces and nephews. Dave was a graduate of East Grand Rapids High School and Ferris State University. He was co-owner of the Grand Rapids Owls Hockey Team, the President of North Shore Estates Association, and a member of the Penn Club. He worked as an employee benefits insurance professional and was co-owner of Watkins, Ross, Waterfield, Baines Agency and for Employee Benefits Administrators (EBA) where he retired. After retirement he joined his son Todd in the construction business. Dave had many hobbies and enjoyed many things in life such as beach time at Lake Michigan, reading, crossword puzzles, watching his grandsons play hockey, time with family and dear friends. He also enjoyed gardening, antiques, art, history, travel, restoring homes in the Heritage Hill area and cars; running, skiing, and sailing. Dave’s family would like to thank the staff at Heron Manor and Emmanuel Hospice for the loving care and friendship shared. The family will meet with friends and relatives Wednesday 4-7:00 p.m. at O’Brien-Eggebeen-Gerst Chapel, 3980 Cascade Rd. S.E., Grand Rapids, and one hour prior to the service. A Memorial Service will be Thursday 2:00 p.m. at the funeral home chapel. Rev. Jill Forton officiating.
