Dean Gerard Van Velsen, age 89, of Ada, Michigan passed away peacefully on Sunday, December 24, 2017. He was preceded in death by his brother Donald Van Velsen. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Vera; brother David (Carol) Van Velsen, children Raymond (Louise Sommer), Russell, Janice Scharich, three cherished grandsons Samuel, Simon and Seth Scharich; brothers-in-law Ed (Joan) Sturgeon, Carl (Linda) Sturgeon; as well as many nieces and nephews. Dean was an undergraduate of Western Michigan University and earned his Master’s degree through the University of Michigan. He was a lifelong musician who taught for 34 years in the Grand Rapids Public Schools and former choir director of over 20 years at Ada Congregational Church. Though he played many musical instruments, he considered his singing voice his favorite. Throughout his life he was active in many theater and musical productions. Dean was an avid tennis player, gardener and grandfather. Those who knew Dean knew a very talented, creative and quietly persistent man. He will be forever missed by family and friends. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, January 6, 12:00 Noon at Ada Congregational Church 6330 Ada Dr. S.E., Ada Rev. Gary Burdick officiating. The family will meet with friends and relatives one hour prior to the service at church.
