Dennis Daniel Ryan, 80, of Grand Rapids, formerly of Kingsford, MI passed away on Easter Sunday, April 20, 2014 at Faith Hospice at Trillium Woods. Dennis was born and raised in the Upper Peninsula. He was born July 22, 1933 in Iron Mountain, MI, son of the late Clarence A. and Jeannetta (Western) Ryan. He graduated from Kingsford High School in 1951. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1952 until 1956. On July 16, 1955, Dennis married his childhood sweetheart Mary Margaret Stanaway of Kingsford, MI in Corpus Christi, TX. Upon returning to the U.P., Dennis attended Northern Michigan University and received a Bachelor’s degree in education and attended the University of Michigan for advanced degrees. He and Mary moved to Davison, Michigan in 1960 where he taught secondary mathematics and driver education for 30 years in the Davison Community School District. During this time he was very active in the NEA, MEA, and the local Education Association. For almost three decades, Dennis served the Davison Community in several leadership roles. He was very civic-minded having served as a part-time police officer, city council member and mayor. Dennis also served on the Davison Area Fire Authority and worked for the Davison Ambulance Service. Dennis is survived by his wife, Mary Margaret; a son, Rev. Mark (Karen) Ryan of Harbor Beach, MI and family; a daughter , Elizabeth (David) Snyder of Grand Rapids, MI; grandchildren, Ryan and Caitlin Snyder; a sister-in-law, Carol Ryan Skogman of Beaver Dam, WI; and a number of nieces and nephews and extended family. He was preceded in death by sister and brother-in-law, Patricia and Charles Nelson; sister and brother-in-law, Geraldine and Edward Collette; and brothers, Michael and Terry Ryan. A Memorial Service will be held on Wednesday, April 30th at 1:30 p.m. at Sentinel Pointe Retirement Community, 2900 Thornhills SE, Grand Rapids, MI 49546. Rev. Joan Cornelison and Rev. Mark Ryan officiating. Interment will be held later in Iron Mountain. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, Faith Hospice and Sentinel Pointe Community Church. The family would like to especially thank the Faith Hospice staff at Trillium Woods and the Sentinel Pointe family for their loving care and support.
