NANZIG – Dr. Reinard P. Nanzig of Grand Rapids died on August 31 2010 he was 93 years old. Reinard was born in Wilmette IL on June 8 1917 to Paul and Wilhelmina Nanzig. He was their only son growing up with his seven sisters. He attended New Trier High School and spent summers as a caddie at local golf courses. While working at Westmoreland Country Club in the summer of 1935 he was awarded one of the first ten Evans Caddie Scholarships. He attended Northwestern University where he received both his undergraduate and medical degrees graduating from Medical School in 1943. He served in the U. S. Navy Medical Corps in the South Pacific from 1943 1946. After completing his postgraduate work in obstetrics and gynecology in Chicago Pontiac and Grand Rapids Reinard began practicing medicine with Dr. James Beaton and Dr. Charles Aldridge. He served on the staffs at St. Marys Hospital and Blodgett Memorial Hospital from 1949-1989. He was a member of the Kent County Medical Society and served as the President in 1972. Reinard was a longtime parishoner at St. Stephens Church in Grand Rapids and St. Roberts Church in Ada. He loved books music especially opera and was an avid golfer until his 90th year. He loved his family and enjoyed chronicling their life in home movies and photos. He is survived by his wife of 63 years Rose and his sons Paul (Jenee), Tom (Barb), Jim Rob (Dianne), Dave (Sarah) and five grandchildren (Shelby Michael Brittany Max and Scott Nanzig; and Megan Thauer) and sister Alberta Braskamp. He was preceded in death by his beloved daughter Amy who died in 2001. Dr. Nanzig was living at the Porter Hills Green House Skilled Nursing Care facility when he passed away. His family would like to thank the staff for the compassionate and loving care they gave Reinard. Mass of Christian Burial will be offered Saturday 10:30 AM at St. Robert of Newminster Church 6477 Ada Dr. SE Rev. Leonard Sudlik and Rev. R. Louis Stasker presiding. Entombment Resurrection Cemetery. Rosary will be recited 6:30 PM. Visitation 2-4 & 6-8 PM at the OBrien-Eggebeen-Gerst Chapel 3980 Cascade Rd. SE.
