Vivian Paramjit Jawahir, M.D., F.A.C.S., age 84, passed away peacefully on May 17, 2018.  Dr. Jawahir born on February 11, 1934 in Amritsar, India. He moved to Grand Rapids in 1964 after graduating from King Edward Medical College. His wife of 55 years, Jane Jahanara Jawahir, M.D. joined him in Grand Rapids later that same year. They moved to London, Ontario, Canada for a time to further their medical training. As a General Surgeon, Vivian and his wife moved back to Grand Rapids in early 1971 where he remained until his passing. Dr. Jawahir loved his private practice at Grandville Medical Center and Saint Mary’s Hospital was his second home until his retirement in 2009. Next to his family, Vivian’s three other passions in life were practicing medicine, gardening, and coming up with a “reason” to have a party (to be with family and friends). A generous man, Dr. Jawahir was always willing to lend his time or talents and was masterful in the art of bartering. Dr. Jawahir was preceded in death by his father and mother, Rev. Canon Emmanuel and Esther Jawahir. He is survived by his wife, Jane and his three children, John (Jamila), Kevin (Jennifer), and Rebecca (John Paul) Sypniewski; and seven grandchildren (Zachary, Matthew, Jacob, Jane, Abigail, Kathryn, and Sydney). Also surviving is his sister, Priobala (William) Khan, and their children, Timothy and Ruth, as well as several brothers- and sisters-in-law.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Mercy Health (Saint Mary’s Foundation or Hauenstein Center Fund) or The Porter Hills Foundation. A memorial service was held May 19, 2018.
