HAKEEM Evelyn Ann Hakeem age 90 of Grand Rapids went home to be with her Lord on January 20 2012. She was preceded in death by her husband of 42 years Elwood Woody and her brother Leo Najar who died during World War II. Evelyn was born in Detroit to Zakiea Shalhoub and Solomon Najar on August 20 1921. Evie found her passion in the kitchen cooking ethnic meals and desserts growing fresh garden tomatoes & cucumbers and enjoyed live concerts and musicals. Evie would be found walking 4 miles a day in her neighborhood always with a smile and quick wit or sense of humor. Evelyn was faithful to saying her Rosary and devoted her life and energy to her three children Mary (Michael) Jazzar Dennis (Phyllis) Hakeem and Suzanne Hakeem. Evie battled Parkinsons with complications for over 15 years with a positive and courageous attitude along with proactive support from loving caregivers in order to continue living in her own home. Her surviving siblings Joseph (Jeanette) Najar Adele Zainea and Ammiel Najar. Evelyn also leaves four loving grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. The family and caregivers will receive friends 10:00 AM February 4th at St. Stephens Catholic Church 750 Gladstone SE East Grand Rapids MI. A Memorial Rosary will be said at 10:30 AM followed by a Catholic Mass at. In lieu of flowers the family is most grateful to Faith Hospice (Trillium Woods), 2100 Raybrook St. SE Grand Rapids MI 49546 where Evelyn enjoyed respite at the Lodge.
