TUPPER Garland Benton Tupper of East Grand Rapids died unexpectedly on December 20 2007. Garland was born September 11 1933 in Great Falls Montana and raised in the Sacramento California area before moving to East Grand Rapids in 1973. She is survived by her husband of 53 years Robert L. Tupper MD and their children Robert L. Tupper Jr. (wife Randi children Michelle Lance and Christopher), William A. Tupper (his late stepson Anthony), Thomas M. Tupper (wife Colleen children Caitlin Kelsey and Megan) of East Lansing Meredith J. Tupper of Springfield Virginia and Catherine J. Duso (son Evan) of Springfield Virginia. She was preceded in death by her daughter Elizabeth. She is also survived by her mother Hazel her brothers Fred (wife Marie) and Jerry Benton and sisters Jane Harper and Dana (husband Mike) Barnhart all of Sacramento. Because of her remarkable intellect she graduated from high school at age 16 and earned her Bachelors degree in English from the University of California by age 20. Garland worked as a school teacher in Omaha Nebraska while her husband was in medical school and also worked for the Federal Land Bank in Omaha. In East Grand Rapids Garland was very active in Christian Education at Grace Episcopal Church and also served on the Diocese Consultation Team. She was very active in the formation of Hospice of Greater Grand Rapids serving as a board member and officer. She continued her love of education by serving as a school board member in East Grand Rapids. Garland had a gift for gardening and nurtured many beautiful gardens. She instilled the love of art and reading into her children and grandchildren. Her friends and family will miss her kindness sense of humor and empathy. The family would like to thank the medical ICU team at Blodgett and the East Grand Rapids Public Safety Department for their outstanding support and care given to Garland and her family. There will be a private family service followed by cremation. The family will receive friends on 2-4 PM at the OBrien-Eggebeen-Gerst Chapel 3980 Cascade Rd. SE. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions to Hospice of Michigan in Garlands name would be appreciated.
