STAPLES – Henry Lord Staples Jr., age 81 passed away January 12 2008. He is survived by his wife of 57 years Mary Alice; children Lucinda (William) McCall Michael (Sarah) Staples; grandchildren Megan (Derek) Schmitt Kathleen McCall John McCall Kathryn Staples Phillip Staples and Hannah Staples; brother James (Terry) Staples of Evanston IL. Henry was an avid sailor and member of Macatawa Bay Yacht Club. He graduated from East Grand Rapids High School in 1944 the U.S. Naval Academy in 1947 Destroyer duty Atlantic Fleet; and received a M.B.A. from Harvard University in 1952. Henry founded owned and operated Carlisle Cashway Inc. as well as Wood Tech Inc. He was involved in local politics and various associations: President Grand Rapids Retail Lumber Dealers Association; Director First National Bank of Grand Rapids; Director Grand Rapids Area Chamber of Commerce; Chairman P.A.C. 1978-1982; and Vice Chairman for Governmental Affairs 1983. Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 a.m. January 15 2008 at St. Paul the Apostle Church 2750 Burton St. SE. Private interment Oakhurst Cemetery in Whitehall Michigan. Visitation will be from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Vigil service at 6 p.m. at the O’Brien-Eggebeen-Gerst Chapel 3980 Cascade Rd. SE. In lieu of memorial contributions may be made to St. John’s Home.
