Lawrence DeHaan, age 93 of Grand Rapids, passed away Wednesday, November 28, 2012. He was born on August 29, 1919 in Kalamazoo, Michigan, the second son of Harm and Elizabeth DeHaan. He graduated from Kalamazoo Central High School and then worked in an electrical company until joining Lear Siegler. Lawrence DeHaan married Eleanore Voss of Kalamazoo and moved to Grand Rapids, Michigan where they celebrated the birth of their only daughter, Julie DeHaan. After Eleanore’s death, Lawrence met and married June S. Bazuin in 1979. By 1940 he was teaching aviation electrical and A/C instruments in Chicago. Then he went on to Hamilton Stanard, Pratt & Whitney and worked with many airframe engine and associated air equipment manufacturers. He traveled extensively around the world solving technical problems for many organizations and spent time at Air Force Bases and working for the U.S Navy. Larry spent several years with William P. Lear and also was reliability manager for space program instruments including the Space Shuttle. Several years ago he traveled to the Smithsonian to donate many instruments he had that came out of World War II aircraft. At the time, at the age of 85 he said I am “not done yet”. He was preceded in death by his first wife Eleanore; parents, Harm and Elizabeth DeHaan and brothers, Garrett and Bert. He is survived by his wife, June; his daughter, Julie DeHaan of Marquette, MI; his step-sons, Gary (Colleen) Bazuin of Gardenerville, NV and Dr. Bradley Baizuin of Kalamazoo; brother and sister-in-law, John and Helen DeHaan of Atlanta; and nieces and nephews. Larry’s family would like to thank the staff at Fountain View for their compassion and care of him. Funeral services will be Saturday 2:00 PM at the O’Brien-Eggebeen-Gerst Chapel, 3980 Cascade Rd. SE, Pastor Lew VanderMeer, officiating. Interment Mount Ever-Rest Cemetery, Kalamazoo. Visitation Friday 7-9 PM and Saturday one hour prior to the service. Memorial contributions may be made to Fountain View of Lowell, Airedale Terrier Rescue Assoc. or the charity of your choice.
