HAKEEM Richard James Hakeem age 79 of Grand Rapids went home to be with his Lord. Family and friends that preceded him in death are his parents Solomon Hakeem and Carrie Bendekgey; brothers Fred (Vicki), William (Mary) and Edmund; sisters Emlie (John) Quinn Alice Losey-Ross; friends before him Maxine Voy Lester (Helen) Gibbs Carl Simmons. Surviving are his daughter Christina Marie Hakeem; grandson Brandon James Hakeem; sister Rose T. Pyke; nieces Bonnie (Marty) Doyle Judy Hakeem Mary Sue Hoeffler Pat (Dick) Kinsley Louis Gilbert Pat Platschorre Cathy Hakeem; nephews Ron (Lori) Pyke Harry (Jan) Pyke Robert (Dorothy) Pyke James Hakeem Jim Quinn Mike (Kim) Hakeem Jeff Hakeem friends Lyle (Carole) Gibbs Ken (Joan) Gibbs Bill (Cathy) Hamilton Ron (Karen) Simmons Marvel Simmons Howard (Bonnie) Simmons Clarence (Nancy) Hamilton Jennifer VanderWood Bill Baxter Jack (Mariel) Ward; several grand nieces and nephews. Mr. Hakeem was born May 2 1930 and grew up on South Division graduated from South High School in 1948. He attended Davenport College from 1955-1957. Mr. Hakeem worked for Aves Advertising Gulf and Western and Grand Rapids Brass where he played on their softball team. He worked 12 years for Midwest Plating before going into business in 1991 with his two friends John VanderPloeg and Herm Segal starting Controlled Plating Technologies. He retired in 2000. Mass of Christian Burial will be offered January 19 2010 at St. Mary Magdalene 1213 52nd St., Kentwood with Rev. Godfrey C. Onyekwere presiding. Interment Resurrection Cemetery. Rosary 7 PM Monday. Visitation and 2-4 & 7-9 PM at the OBrien-Eggebeen-Gerst Funeral Home 3980 Cascade Rd SE Grand Rapids. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Faith Hospice 2100 Raybrook SE Suite 300 Grand Rapids 49546 and Kent County Humane Society 3077 Wilson NW Grand Rapids 49534.
