Richard John Klis, age 75 of Grand Rapids, passed away peacefully July 3, 2012 after a heroic 15 month battle with mesothelioma. Richard will be lovingly remembered for his unending kindness, deep faith, quick wit and love of his family. We have been privileged to call him husband, father, grandfather, uncle and friend. Richard was born and raised in NE Minneapolis and graduated from the University of Minnesota. He was a Navy Corpsman, computer and advertising salesman by trade, golfer by passion, youth coach, St. Robert’s lector, a committed volunteer and long-time member of Watermark Country Club. His golf game was the stuff of which legends are made and will be remembered for generations. Preceded in death by parents, Victor and Angela; sisters, Mary, Ann, Joann and Helen; brothers, Stanley, Joseph, Wally and Edward. Richard proudly reached his goal of celebrating his Golden Anniversary with the love of his life while surrounded by family and friends on June 30th. Survived by his devoted wife of 50 years, Ruth; children, Julie (Tom) Hull, Dr. Gregory Klis and Carrie Klis (Eric Hummel); grandchildren, Alisha, Michael, Isabella, Brandon, Hayden and Dylan; son-in-law, Bill Clark; sister-in-laws, Jean, Rita Barb and Marilyn; many, many beloved nieces, nephews, friends and his best golfing partner & friend, Jerry Bergman. We would like to extend our deepest gratitude for the extraordinary nursing staff at Spectrum 5 South; Dr. Mark Campbell and his caring staff at the Lemmen-Holton Cancer Center. In lieu of flowers, memorials to Renucci Hospitality House, c/o Spectrum Heath Foundation or American Cancer Society. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday, July 7 at 11 am at St. Robert of Newminster 6477 Ada Drive SE, Rev. Leonard Sudlik and Msgr. R. Louis Stasker, co-presiders. Visitation one hour prior to the service at the church.
