Robert Joseph Walters, Sr., age 88 of Grand Rapids, passed away on Friday, May 27, 2016 after a short illness. Bob was born and raised in Lancaster, OH. Bob served in the US Marines during World War II. Bob was a member of St. Robert of Newminster Parish and St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church. Bob was involved in numerous parish activities including the Knights of Columbus for 60-plus years, a member of the men’s golf league, and numerous charity events. Bob and his wife Pat sponsored the annual corn roast at St. Roberts to raise funds for a scholarship fund at Aquinas College in memory of their daughter, Annette. Bob was a member of the Creston Gun Club where he enjoyed occasional outings with his grandsons. Bob’s passion for gardening began as a young man working in greenhouses. This experience led to his passion for gardening and maintaining his beautiful flower beds. Bob’s adult career was primarily in the soft drink business at 7-Up and Pepsi and later with Newell Manufacturing in Lowell. Bob was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Patricia (Pat), and his daughter, Annette Blaschka. Bob is survived by his son, Robert Walters, Jr. (Diane); four grandchildren, Matt Walters (Dina), Kelly Breen (Jason), Christopher Armstrong (Lindsey), and Ian Blaschka; great-grandchildren Brooklyn Gromko, Alivia Armstrong, and Hudson Breen; and his constant companion, Chase, a Golden Retriever. Bob was blessed to have excellent caretakers the past two years, allowing him to stay in his home, which he cherished. Visitation will be held Wednesday 2-4:00 p.m. and 6-8:00 p.m. with the rosary recited at 6:00 p.m. at O’Brien-Eggebreen-Gerst Chapel, 3980 Cascade Road SE, Grand Rapids. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday 11:00 a.m. at St. Robert of Newminster Church, 6477 Ada Dr. S.E., Ada. Rev. Leonard Sudlik celebrant. Interment Georgetown Township Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made to the Annette Blaschka Aquinas College Nursing Scholarship Fund in care of St. Robert of Newminster Church.
