Sister Ottilia Schaub, OP

Schaub, OP, Sister Ottilia of Grand Rapids (born in Lake Leelanau) died on June 7, 2018. She was 92 years old and a Dominican Sister for 68 years.  Sister Ottilia received a BA degree in Social Science and MA degree in Religious Education from Aquinas College and a Masters in the Art of Teaching (MAT) degree at the Catholic University of America, majoring in Psychology and Counseling.  Sr. Ottilia served in her ministry as a teacher at St. Mary, Carson City;  St. Alphonsus, Grand Rapids; St. Mary, Kingsley; and Catholic Central High School, Grand Rapids, and then served as Coordinator of Counseling and Advising at Aquinas College, Grand Rapids.  For the next nearly three decades Sr. Ottilia assisted people in need, especially the aged of Grand Rapids, through her service with the Voluntary Action Center, United Way of Kent County, Heart of West Michigan United Way and Senior Neighbors.  She was honored with the Service Provider of the Year Award from the Western Michigan Society of Gerontology for her work with United Way First Call for Help. She later served on the Prayer and Listening Line and in support services at Marywood.  Sister Ottilia desired to assist people to a more fully human life by meeting their human needs. This she did with focus and commitment, walking humbly in service of all persons.  Sr. Ottilia is survived by her sister Theresa Schaub, Traverse City;  her brother Louis (Judith) Schaub, Grand Rapids; sister-in-law Jean Schaub, Lake Leelanau; nieces and nephews, many friends and members of her Dominican Community.  Sister Ottilia will repose at Dominican Chapel/Marywood, 2025 Fulton Street East, with visitation on Sunday, June 10 from 6:00-7:00 p.m., followed by a Remembering Service at 7:00 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, June 11 at Dominican Chapel/Marywood. Burial will be at Resurrection Cemetery. Memorials in Sister Ottilia Schaub’s name may be made to the Grand Rapids Dominican Sisters Health Care Fund.
