Death: August 4, 2014 

Walter Jay Koster, age 88 of Grand Rapids, passed away Monday, August 4, 2014. He was preceded in death by his brother, George Koster, and grandson Zachary DeVille. Walter leaves behind his partner in life for 67 years, Rosemary, and children Kathy (Greg) Kukawski, Patty (John) Dennehy, Mike (Judy) Koster, Rick (Denise) Koster, Mary Chris (Steve) Heintzelman, Jane (Rick) Berkey, David Koster, Laura (John) Gardner and Joan (Brian) Day. Walter always had a proud smile and warm welcome for every one of his and Rosemary’s 20 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Walter is also survived by his sister, Shirley Koster, sisters-in-law Marjory Koster and Patricia Pasbach and brother-in-law Larry Pasbach. Starting out as a timekeeper in the payroll department, Walter progressed to eventually become manager of legal services in a 39-year career at LSI/Smiths Industries. He served as a Eucharistic Minister at IHM for several years and occasionally delivered the Eucharist to retirement village residents. His passion for the game of golf was always evident; whether at his weekly leagues or the special holiday rounds he played with his sons. Walter would often draw a chuckle from his large family with his patented cry of mock anguish:” What have I wrought?” Walter’s family will welcome friends for visitation Thursday 2-4:00 p.m and 6-8:00 p.m. at O’Brien-Eggebeen-Gerst Chapel, 3980 Cascade Road, Grand Rapids, with Rosary recited at 7:00 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday 11:00 a.m. at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Parish, 1935 Plymouth SE, Grand Rapids. Rev. Troy Nevins and Rev. Leonard Sudlik concelebrating. Interment Resurrection Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation to one’s charity of choice in Walter’s name.
