Anna Afendoulis, age 87 of Grand Rapids, passed away on Wednesday, August 7, 2013. She is fondly remembered by her family as a wonderful mother and wife and a creative homemaker with an unusual appreciation for beauty and knack for value. She lived passionately and actively, and was an outspoken and caring mentor to those she loved. During her lifetime she was a voice and piano teacher, talented seamstress, an artist and a volunteer for her church and for other non-profit organizations. Born in Lansing, Mich. Anna married Gus Afendoulis and moved to Grand Rapids. She could often be seen decorating the windows of the family’s business, Afendoulis Cleaners, for the season. She was one of the original co-chairs of the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church’s souvlaki booth at Grand Rapids’ Festival of the Arts, and a founder of Hellenic Horizons, a cultural organization. In her later years, she and her husband lived in Clearwater Beach, Fla., and Raleigh, N.C. She is survived by her husband, Gus; daughter Vicki (Chuck) Phaneuf and their son, Charles; daughter Cynthia Kay; and son Stephen (Bess) and their sons Peter and Greg, sister-in laws Alexandria Athans and Tina Afendoulis; cousins Clark and Katie Afendoulis as well as many nieces, nephews, godchildren and friends. She was loved dearly and will be missed.
Visitation will be Saturday, August 10, 9-10:00 a.m. at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, 330 Lakeside Drive SE, Grand Rapids, MI 49503. Funeral services will follow at 10:00 a.m. followed by light refreshments.
