Elizabeth “Betsy” (Longo) Jermstad beloved wife of Robert James Jermstad III entered eternal life on Saturday, December 15 2018, after a courageous battle with ALS. She was surrounded by loved ones while she surrendered to God and left this earth to join in His glory.  Loving wife, sister, aunt and friend.  Betsy was born on September 2 1962, to the late Michael Longo and Julianne Longo. Her devotion to her faith began at an early age and she later graduated in 1981 from Catholic Central High School. She met Robert “Bobby” James Jermstad III in 2001 and the two were later married on September 12 2003, at St. Isidore’s Catholic Church. No two souls were ever more perfectly matched.  Betsy was known and loved by many in the Grand Rapids area and was a hard working and faithful employee in several capacities. One of her greatest attributes was her deep and abiding faith that was an example to all. She was a very active member of her church community at St. Isidore’s and more recently St. Jude’s Catholic Church. Prayer was her anchor throughout her life and her refuge during her recent struggles with ALS.  Betsy deeply loved her devoted husband Bobby who valiantly and meticulously cared for her to the very end. She relished gardening, cooking, baking and socializing with all she met. She was a lifelong dog lover, caring for many loyal German Shepherds over the years. Betsy enjoyed live music, especially the blues. She was very involved with her nieces and nephews and treasured supporting them during many sporting and life events. Betsy was an extremely kind and generous person, consistently putting others before herself.  She is preceded in death by her parents, Michael and Julianne Longo; sister, Marianne (Longo) Casarez and brother-in-law, Jack Milanowski.  Betsy is survived by her devoted and beloved husband, Robert James Jermstad III; her siblings, Michael (Sue) Longo, Kathleen (Jim) Command, Janet (Frank) Ventura, Maureen Milanowski, Thomas Longo and David Longo; many loving nieces and nephews as well as grand-nieces and -nephews.  Betsy also shared a very special relationship with her Aunt Dort (Williams).  Visitation will be Tuesday 4-8 PM with a prayer service at 7 PM at O’Brien-Eggebeen-Gerst Chapel, 3980 Cascade Rd SE and Wednesday at 10:30 AM prior to the Mass of Christian Burial at 11 AM at St. Jude Catholic Church, 1120 Four Mile Rd NE. Rev. Tom Page presiding.  Entombment Resurrection Mausoleum.  Memorial contributions may be made to the Michigan Chapter of ALS Association, 675 E. Big Beaver Rd, Suite 207  Troy, MI  48083.

  1. I will miss you Betsy, you always had the kindest soul. May you rest in heavenly peace.

  2. I worked with Elizebeth during our years with Meijer. We shared many breaks together when we were working on resets during the remodeling of the Alpine Meijer a few years back. I remember seeing her check out her purchases a year or 2 after we worked together . She did not look well and told me she had ALS and that her husband was taking her home soon. I tried contacting her for the longest time through Facebook. No result and now I know why. She was a kind soul. I am glad she is at peace now. Condolences to her husband and family even though it is a few years late.
