Hattie Eliza Van Haaften of Grand Rapids, MI, passed away on May 25, 2023. She grew up on a farm in Bellaire, Michigan with her sisters, Norma & Irma; and parents, Henry & Hattie, all of which preceded her in death. Hattie was also preceded in death by her husband, Ken Van Haaften. Ken and Hattie spent a lifetime working together at KVH Home Builders and Arbor Lake Apartments. Later in life, they founded a charity called Senior Sing A-long to share the benefits of live music with local nursing home residents. Her family and many friends will miss Hattie’s lively and caring personality. She enjoyed gardening, music, cats, politics, and especially sports. Go Blue. Her children survive her, Eric Van Haaften and Jill (Martin) Dover; and her grandchildren, Shawn, and Kyle; as well as many beloved nieces and nephews. Her life will be celebrated in a private interment ceremony for the family. A Garden Party brunch for family and friends will start at 1:00 PM on June 11, 2023, at her home at 2973 Thorncrest Dr. SE, Grand Rapids, MI. For those who wish, memorial contributions to Senior Sing A-long at https://seniorsingalong.org/ are appreciated.

  1. I am So SORRY for your loss. My tears are ever flowing. She is a Great Friend and always w be. I know in my heart that we will meet again in Heaven!!!!!

  2. My dear Hattie! Friend from high school to trips back and forth from Grand Rapids to Bellaire to trips to Waswagon for dances with her Dad, Henry, to all the weddings, babies and graduations after that. So many memories! You were so special and will be missed. May God rest your soul!🙌

  3. I am so sorry for the loss of your Mather (& your Father). I met all of you when we lived on Woodcliff many years ago. Your Mom and I had a mutual friend who introduced us. Your Mom always had a smile on her face and their yard was a pleasant site when walking. We lost contact when they moved to Thorncrest. May your memories be a source of consolation.

  4. My deepest condolences to Jill and family. I hope the garden party brunch today is well-attended by all those who loved Hattie, as I know there are many. Donation made to Senior Sing A-Long with love and admiration to all.
