Janis (John) Plate passed away at Faith Hospice, surrounded by his family, on August 31, 2020 at age 93. Janis was born in Latvia to Janis and Alide (Kalnins) Plate.  He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Rasma Ladite; brother, Uldis Plate; & his nephew, Edwin Plate. He retired from Smiths Industries (formerly Lear Siegler), where he worked for many years. He is survived by his wife, Velga; daughters, Rita Plate and Lindy (Ty) Tanis; grandson, Kirgin; two sisters-in-law, a brother-in-law, and their families; many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends in the United States and Latvia. There will be a graveside service on Friday, September 4, 2020 at 1:00 pm at Woodlawn Cemetery in Grand Rapids, with Rev. Ilze Larsen officiating.  In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, http://www.nationalmssociety.org/ or The Museum of Occupation in Latvia.
