Jesusita “Hezzie” Stauffer

Jesusita “Hezzie” Stauffer, age 97 of Lowell, died Friday, July 19, 2019.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Lester E. Stauffer; parents, Carlos and Angelita Herrera; daughter, Ardist Merritt; stepson, Robert (Sandy) Stauffer; son-in-law, Andrew Klein; several brothers and sisters.  Hezzie is survived by her children, Arva Stauffer, Ardelle Klein, Shirley Stauffer, Karen (David) Torres, Roger Stauffer; stepson, Lee (Gladys) Stauffer; stepdaughter, Janice (Pete) Bosanic; son-in-law, Michael Merritt; brother, Alonzo Herrera; 20 grandchildren, many great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews and “adopted children”, Judy Hakala and Karen Knapp.  Hezzie was a great cook and homemaker specializing in homemade noodles, fried chicken and Spanish rice.  She also raised countless chickens.  She was an avid bird watcher and a charter member of the Mid-Michigan Bird Association, a Lowell VFW member, “Royal Squares” Square Dancing Club.  She was a very kind hearted and generous person with friends across the country.  She was loved by all.  The Herrera family was one of the original families that came across on the Chihuahua trail, settling in Alamito, Texas.  The homestead is designated with a Texas historical maker.  Mass of Christian Burial will be offered Tuesday, July 23 at 11:30AM at St. Alphonsus Church, 224 Carrier St., NE, Grand Rapids, Rev. Patrick Grile, CSsR, presiding.  Visitation Monday 2-4 PM and 6-8 PM with a Rosary at 7:30 PM at the Roth-Gerst Chapel, 305 N. Hudson, Lowell and Tuesday one hour prior to the service at church.  Interment Oakwood Cemetery.
