BURNS, KEVIN “Newt”, Age 44, of Grand Rapids passed away unexpectedly on November 24, 2014. He was born June 3, 1970 in Grand Rapids, MI to Philip and Sharon (Patterson) Burns. Kevin attended Immaculate Heart of Mary Elementary School, Catholic Central High School, and Aquinas College.
He had a love of sports that extended into his adulthood. He played on several softball, bowling & golf leagues and was known around town for his athletic abilities. His sports knowledge was second to none. His favorite pastimes included any time spent with his nieces and nephews and he had a unique handshake for each one. He was first choice for family Trivial Pursuit games because he had a vast knowledge of pop culture and always came out the winner. Kevin had the biggest heart and would go out of his way to help any friend or stranger in need.
Kevin is survived by his siblings: Sean and Mary Burns; Colleen (Burns) and Greg Simmons; Brian & Kelly Burns; Bridgid Burns and Molly Burns. He is also survived by his nieces and nephews: Killian, Teagan and Aidan Burns; Matthew Burns; Danny & Emma Simmons; and Brogan and Meghan Burns. Kevin also leaves behind his aunts and uncles; Maureen & George Phillips and Dennis & Roberta Patterson; several loving cousins; and countless amounts of friends. He was preceded in death by his parents Philip and Sharon Burns; his paternal grandparents Frank & Minnie Burns; his maternal grandparents Jack and Thelma Patterson; his fun-loving Aunt Birdie; and many beloved great-aunt and great-uncles.
Visitation will be held at O’Brien-Eggebeen-Gerst Chapel, 3980 Cascade Rd. S.E., Grand Rapids, Friday, November 28 from 6-8:00 PM. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 AM on Saturday, November 29th at Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Church, 6369 Belmont Ave NE, in Belmont.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you consider donations to the scholarship at his alma mater, Catholic Central, in his parents’ name.
