Mary Catherine (Mary Cay) Schmieder, aged 91, lived most of her life in Grand Rapids, and passed away peacefully on June 5, 2018 at Suzanne’s Place, in King-Bruwaert House, Burr Ridge, Il. She was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, John (Jack) Schmieder. She is survived by her six children, Mary Lynn Elker, Joe (Valerie) Schmieder, John (Suzanne) Schmieder, Steve (Mary) Schmieder, Molly (Robb) Rankin, Matt (Ann) Schmieder; 16 grandchildren, Christie (Carlos) Medina, Maureen Schmieder, Jill (Romeo) Hereau, Theresa (Marcos) De la Fuente, Andrew (Danielle) Schmieder, Kelly (Chris) Rzemieniecki, Matthew Schmieder, Daniel (Alaina) Schmieder, Eric (Annie) Schmieder, Ben Rankin, James (Jessica) Schmieder, Maria Schmieder, Nick Rankin, Adam Schmieder, Molly Schmieder, Elise Schmieder; 10 great grandchildren, Jack, Dean, Marie, Clark, Wolfe, Ramona, Rohan, Atilio, Julian, Henry and one great grandson due any day.  Mary Cay and Jack were members of Immaculate Heart of Mary Church for over 40 years. They had a great life together creating a large loving family who remain very close.  Mary Cay continued to participate in many family traditions and always lit up around her many grandchildren and great grandchildren.  She displayed a compassionate attitude throughout her life, working early as a Registered Nurse before raising six children,and then enjoying life with her fellow residents at the Scottish Home and King-Bruwaert House where she lived during her later years.  Mass of Christian Burial will be offered 11am Monday, June 11, at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, Plymouth & Burton SE, Rev. Troy Nevins, Rev. Leonard Sudlik and Rev. Peter Vu presiding.  Entombment at Resurrection Cemetery.  Visitation Sunday, June 10 from 4 to 8; Rosary will be recited at 7:00 at the O’Brien-Eggebeen-Gerst Chapel, 3980 Cascade Rd. SE.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Alzheimer’s Association, Greater Michigan Chapter, 25200 Telegraph Rd.   1. I remember Mary Kay with Bill and Terese at our Family reunions. She was always so happy. I am so glad I met her family during happy times. She will be missed. Cousin Henry (Hank) Schmitz. Prayers to the family

  2. Mary Cay is, as mentioned here, now with a host of familial angels overlooking their loved ones. May she rest in peace and may her family and loved ones continue to celebrate her life.

  3. Mary Cay was the sweetest lady. I always looked forward to seeing her at the family reunions, along with Jack, they were definitely a match made in heaven! There will be more laughter, and card playing in heaven now. ❤️
