Mary Kathryn Dark, age 90 of Grand Rapids, passed away Tuesday, March 25, 2014. Mary K. was born August 4, 1923, to Lawrence and Esther (Lawless) Dark in Grand Rapids. She was a graduate of Mercy Central School of Nursing, and University of St. Louis, MO with a degree in Pediatric Nursing. She returned to Grand Rapids and then served in WWII as a nurse on a hospital ship. After returning Mary K. worked at Mercy Central School of Nursing where she became Director of the Nursing School. She belonged to St. Mary’s Retired Nurses Association, was a former member of St. Francis Church, and was a devoted Catholic all of her life. She was predeceased by her parents; brothers, Fr. Larry Dark, Michael J. Dark; and sister, Dorothy Hieshetter. She is survived by her brother, John (Jack) Joyce Dark, sister-in-law, Dr. Alison Dark; nieces and nephews; cousins; and a host of friends throughout her life. Mass of Christian Burial will be held Monday 10:30 a.m. at the Cathedral of St. Andrew, 265 Sheldon Ave. SE, Rev. Tom Bolster, presiding. Visitation Saturday 2-4:00 p.m. and Sunday 2-4:00 p.m. at the O’Brien-Eggebeen-Gerst Chapel, 3980 Cascade Rd. SE. Memorial Contributions may be made to St. Ann’s Home, 2161 Leonard Street, N.W. Grand Rapids, MI 49504. Military honors will be held under the auspices of the Honor Guard of St. Mary’s Hospital School of Nursing Association.
